Business Dynamics and Challenges

Business Activities: Core Business Activities 1. Agriculture 2. Peeled Vegetables Supply 3. Food Processing – Chili Sauce Production 4. Pot plant manufacturing
Challenges/Needs: The client was first introduced to the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA) during a Farmers’ Market Exhibition hosted by Thembisile Hani Local Municipality. She had been formally invited by the municipality to showcase her products, which included pot plants and hot sauce. The exhibition provided a platform to market her products, engage with potential customers, and network with enterprise development support institutions. At that time, the business was operating from the backyard of her residential property with limited space and resources. Despite these constraints, the client demonstrated strong entrepreneurial drive and clear product potential. Following her participation in the exhibition and subsequent business growth, the client transitioned from operating at her residence to a dedicated business stand. This development significantly enhanced her operational capacity, product visibility, and customer reach. As a result of improved infrastructure and increased market access, the business is now experiencing steady growth, reflected in improved sales turnover and an expanding market presence. The enterprise continues to contribute positively to local economic development.

Intervention Insights and Results

Intervention Details: The business has undertaken structured development initiatives to strengthen its readiness for external funding. As part of this process, the enterprise received support through facilitated access to local markets, including participation in the Farmers’ Market hosted by Thembisile Hani Local Municipality. This exposure enabled the business to showcase its products, generate sales, and establish a credible market presence.
The increased market exposure contributed to improved brand visibility, customer acquisition, and revenue growth, thereby enhancing the business’s funding readiness.
Furthermore, the enterprise has planned product testing for its hot sauce as part of quality assurance and market expansion. This initiative will ensure compliance with food safety standards, improve product consistency, and strengthen the business case for funding applications and future scalability.
Outcome Details: Following SEDFA’s support, the business was able to:
• Secure access to additional markets, resulting in an expanded customer base
• Increase sales revenue from R14,000 (at the Assessment Date) to R32,000 (at the Improvement Assessment Date)
